Some Like it Tart – Main Line Frozen Yogurt Picks

Svelte Hollywood actresses got their daily fix. Then New Yorkers went crazy for it. And just like other trends (food trucks, cupcakes) we’re finally basking in the glory. I’m talking about tart frozen yogurt.

Many people love this type of yogurt because it’s healthy and not overly sweet. It tastes like plain Greek yogurt, but in a frozen form. There are already three shops on the Main Line offering this treat, and more are arriving. Here’s a preview of what you’ll taste:

If you like it extra tart and tangy …

A magnet for shoppers at Suburban Square, Sweetgreen is an eco-friendly chain that boasts create-your-own salads and yogurt. Full of tart and tang, their yogurt has live active cultures, is fat free and all-natural. A small selection of healthy toppings is available, like blackberries, strawberries, walnuts and more.  Yogurts come in two sizes, with three toppings included.

If you’re virtuous and modern …

Located in downtown Wayne, next to the train station, Yogo Sano is super serious about health. Their tart yogurt is infused with probiotics, omega-3 DHA, Calcium, Vitamin D and prebiotic fiber,  and is gluten-free and rBST-hormone free. But this organic yogurt doesn’t skimp on flavor. Three sizes are available, with toppings like hazelnut crisp, forest berry and nutella. Mod seating is featured inside and out, but strolling along the streets of Wayne might be the best way to enjoy this yogurt.

If you’re all about the toppings …

How can you not love a place with the name Whirled Peace? It might be easy to miss this cozy shop, right across from Paoli Shopping Center (and now also in Manayunk), but it’s well worth the stop. There’s a rotating list of flavors like blueberry and NYC cheesecake, along with the original tart. Design your own mixture of yogurt and then go crazy with toppings from the traditional (nuts, fruit, chocolate) to the more unusual (rice crispy treat balls, pretzel M&Ms, fruity pebbles).  Cost is .50 cents per ounce.

More fro yo options…

TCBY

Just last week TCBY announced a new classification for its “Super Fro-Yo,” deeming it the healthiest on the market. While not the tart variety, select versions of TCBY’s yogurts are now officially packed with Vitamins A & D,  probiotics, dietary fiber, protein and calcium.

Kiwi Frozen Yogurt

Already a top spot for frozen yogurt in West Chester and University City, this chain is expanding to Malvern and the Main Line very soon. It’s a concept very similar to Whirled Peace. Make your own yogurt and toppings, and pay by the ounce. With flavors like thin mint cookies, angel food cake and root beer float, we can’t wait to get started.
