Brandywine Valley: Destination for Exotic Mushrooms and Wineries

The Morning Call recently hit the road for a “mushroom lovers’ trip,” and of course, there is no other place to do so than around Kennett Square! As writer Diane W. Stoneback relayed, “Kennett Square offers mushroom lovers the chance to indulge in an all-day fungus foray — from breakfasting on a mushroom and cheese omelet at one of artist Andrew Wyeth’s former haunts to downing a tasty mushroom freezer pop.”

What recs did they offer up to their readers, you ask?

On the top of their list was the Mushroom Cap, as owner Kathi Lafferty is a “grand source of mushroom information.” They hit Hank’s Place, one of Andrew Wyeth’s favorite places to eat, and suggest to you to grub on the Shiitake, Portobello and Cheese Omelet.

Mushrooms Cafe was also dutifully noted, which owner Meryle Voytilla suggested in the writeup that her “eclectic shop and restaurant is a popular stop for Longwood Gardens visitors who want to pick up a few mushrooms and have mushroom dishes without having to go all the way to Kennett Square.”

Writer Stoneback also points out Voytilla’s steal-of-a-lunch-deal. For $7.50, score housemade soup, a half sandwich, a side of fruit salad or kettle chips and a kosher pickle. More info on Mushrooms, found at 878 Baltimore Pike (Rt. 1) in Chadds Ford, may be found by clicking here.

And, we fully support their stop along the Brandywine Valley Wine Trail, at Chaddsford Winery, in order to grab some wines that’ll pair perfectly with mushroom specialties. And, you may also picnic at Chaddsford and dive into the mushroom goodies you’ve handpicked during the road trip.
