Local Food and Drink Pairings for Valentine’s Day

This February, don’t be unprepared! Whether you’re stocking up for a last minute dinner party with friends or a Valentine’s Day surprise, we’ve compiled a list of local pairings that are perfect for any occasion. With the 14th right around the corner, why not grab a few items we’ve suggested and get creative!

Victory Brewing Company

I asked Karen Noonan of Victory Brewing Company to provide some fun pairings. She gave us this wonderful, diverse list.

  • Pair Victory’s Headwaters Pale Ale with rich dishes because the tea-like earthiness and herbal hop complexity of the beer cleans the palate after each bite.
  • Try Victory’s Prima Pils with spicy dishes because of the long dry finish on this quenching beer.
  • Try Victory’s Storm King Stout with chocolate. (YUM) The roasted malt in the beer perfectly complements deep chocolate flavors.

Penns Woods Winery

Carley from Penns Woods Winery was able to provide an extensive list of pairings, because each week in February they are hosting private wine and chocolate pairings! “We are pairing six of our Reserve wines with six different chocolates from John and Kira’s. There will also be Italian style dessert bread served,” explained Carley. Sounds delicious!

  • Pair Penns Woods Chardonnay Reserve 2010 with John and Kira’s almond encrusted, dark chocolate Toffee.
  • Try Penns Woods Cabernet Reserve 2005 with the strawberry ganache square.
  • Penns Woods Chambourcin Reserve 2006 paired with John and Kira’s Bergamont chocolate ganache square.
  • Check out Penns Woods Merlot Reserve 2006, paired with John and Kira’s raspberry dark chocolate ganache in a hard, hand painted shell.
  • Try Penns Woods Lacrima Dolce with John and Kira’s chocolate dipped, whiskey infused ganache filled fig.
  • Pair the Traminette 2010 with John and Kira’s lavender honey chocolate ganache square.

Dia Doce Cupcakes

Thais da Silva of Dia Doce Cupcakes gave me a little history behind their unique cupcakes. “We make a lot of delicious cupcakes that pair local ingredients not usually found in cupcakes.” Perfect! From Bacon Maple Crumb to Lemon Basil, each combination sounds more interesting than the last. They even have a cupcake that is made with beer!

  • Salted Caramel Stout Cupcake: Victory’s Storm King Stout paired with rich fudge and browned salted caramel crème. Try it with a Victory! Pair Victory’s Headwaters Pale Ale with rich dishes because the tea-like earthiness and herbal hop complexity of the beer cleans the palate after each bite.

Sly Fox Brewing Company

Brewmaster Brian O’Reilly concocted a great Valentines Day pairing for us. Feel free to enjoy with your favorite local chocolate!

Black Walnut Winery

Every Saturday and Sunday in February, Black Walnut Winery is holding wine and chocolate pairings. Val Castle of Black Walnut explained that they worked exclusively with Bridge Street Chocolates on these very special pairings.

  • Try Black Walnut’s 2008 Blanc Franc paired with Bridge Street Chocolate’s Cashew, Almond and Pecan Brittle.
  • Pair Black Walnut’s 2009 Vidal Blanc paired with a Coconut Truffle from Bridge Street Chocolates.
  • Pair the 2007 Amethyst with a Bridge Street Chocolates’ Cappuccino Truffle.
  • Black Walnut’s Smitten (with a special Valentine’s label!) paired with candied orange peel coated with dark chocolate.
  • Try Black Walnut’s More Than “M” port-style wine paired with a single origin dark chocolate heart from Bridge Street Chocolates.
