West Chester Beer Ladies Collaborate with Iron Hill on a Limited-Edition Beer for Charity

There’s a good reason to visit Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant on May 10 at 6 p.m.: that’s when a limited-edition beer will be released in support of Chester County’s Home of the Sparrow.

It’s not as if you need a compelling reason to try the soon-to-be-named Honey Saison: it’s fresh beer from Iron Hill, so that’s a no-brainer. But since a portion of each brew sold will go to charity, it makes the sampling that much sweeter.

Home of the Sparrow’s mission is to provide housing and supportive services to homeless and low-income women who want to improve their lives and become self-sufficient. Iron Hill is a regular supporter, and recently donated 20 percent of select dinner proceeds to this worthy cause.

The new Honey Saison is a collaboration between Iron Hill and the West Chester Beer Ladies (WCBL), a social club in the Philadelphia suburbs for women who enjoy all things beer. Iron Hill brewer Larry Horwitz invited the WCBL not only to participate in the release, but also to select the style and name, and to help with the brewing process on Saturday, April 14, beginning at 9 a.m.

The WCBL met recently at The Flying Pig in Malvern to brainstorm the type of beer and what to call it, ably inspired by The Pig’s expansive craft beer list. Members then voted on a name via online secret ballot. The WCBL is always welcoming new members (it’s free): women interested in learning about and tasting beer while noshing around Chester County may simply “Like” the WCBL Facebook page.

According to WCBL Founder Colleen Perrin, local female brewer and Victory Brewing Company’s Quality Assurance Manager Whitney Thompson will be in the house on April 14. Other female brewers may make an appearance: watch WCDish.com for the latest and greatest on this tasty partnership.
