Baggataway Doubles Your Fun with Derby de Mayo

For its sixth year, the Baggataway’s Derby de Mayo – a combination Cinco de Mayo and Kentucky Derby outdoor celebration – was bigger than ever.  For their largest crowd yet, it was apparent “the Bagg” would have to step up to meet demand.  And step up they did, taking over their entire parking lot with a massive tent, three bands, and plenty of refreshments for the crowd to enjoy.

The refreshments leaned more towards de Mayo than Derby, but no one seemed to mind that the only Kentucky representative at the gathering was a delicious but oh-so-strong mint julep.  For the other namesake of the event, there was plenty to choose from: Corona and Dos Equis headlined the beer portion while there were also refreshing Margaritas and straight-up tequila shots. Clearly, no one was going home thirsty.

Nor would they go home hungry. Outside, under the tent, the Baggataway offered three different kinds of tacos: chicken, blackened tilapia, and pork with pineapple. The tacos all came with beans and rice, with the option of a variety of house-made salsas and guacamole to add as each attendee saw fit.  For anyone not in the celebratory mood, the offerings inside included Baggataway’s regular selection of craft beer and a menu of classic bar food like burgers and wings.

The weather for the event was perfect—the sun was out, but not blazing hot, and every once in a while there was a cool breeze, which kept the event crowd from getting overheated.  And, while clouds started to roll in during the late afternoon, there was never a drop of rain—a huge improvement over last year.  The crowd was able to comfortably spread out, mingle, and enjoy their variety of beverages without crowding under the tent to avoid the rain.

For yet another year, Baggataway Tavern co-owners Stew and Julie Keener have put on another great celebration of both Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby.  The event is always a fun time, and, as they say, “the proof is in the pudding,” as the crowd grows each year.  People are enjoying themselves and word is getting out, so everyone needs to add the event to their calendar for next year.  Even if you can’t make it to the celebration, though, be sure to visit the Baggataway for good food, a great craft beer selection, and awesome people.
