West Chester Story Slam’s “Paid Vacation” Hits Victory Brewing Co.

On Tuesday night, June 12th, the West Chester Story Slam will be hearing stories on the theme “Paid Vacation” at Victory Brewing Company!

The West Chester Story Slam is an open mic storytelling night that happens the second Tuesday of every month. Now in its third year, hundreds of stories have been told in front of a live audience and a wide range of themes. The story slam originated in West Chester, but moved to Victory Brewing in January, 2012 to accommodate the growing audience. Check out Jake Michael’s winning story from May, 2012.

The rules are really simple:

Storytellers register upon arrival. Names are drawn out of a hat to decide order of presentation.

Stories should fit into the theme of the night!
Stories should be true as you remember it!
Stories should be under five minutes in length!
No Notes, No Props, No Music!

Three judges are selected from the audience. Each storyteller is given a score on a scale of 1-10 for two different criteria: content and presentation. The storyteller with the highest score wins, and is given a spot in November’s Grand Slam!

While the West Chester Story Slam is a competition, please be assured they don’t take the competitive part too seriously. The goal is to provide a fun night of stories for the audience, and it’s always a thrill to see new participants hop on-stage.

What does the theme “Paid Vacation” mean?

Really, any vacation stories will fit the bill. Perhaps it’s a story where you combined vacation with work so you were traveling on the company dime, or you had a vacation that paid you back in unexpected ways. Have you ever been reimbursed for a vacation because of the horrendous accomodations? Maybe it wasn’t a “vacation” at all, but a hellish business trip with absolutely no breaks, or you were stationed overseas while serving our military and had short weekend trips where you learned about a culture.

The June Story Slam is Tuesday, June 12th at 8pm in the back room at Victory Brewing Company in Downingtown, PA. Be sure to arrive early for dinner and a good seat!
