Party Planning 101: How-To Host the Ultimate Blobfest Bash

It’s time for my FAVORITE festival in Phoenixville… BLOBFEST!

This is the 13th year for the party that celebrates The Blob, the 1958 sci-fi classic which was shot in several Chester County locations, including the Colonial Theatre. Despite the unlucky number, I believe this will actually be the best Blobfest yet! This year, I am hosting my own Blobfest party before heading down to the festivities on Saturday, and here are some tips to make your own Blobfest party the best ever!

Have a Costume Contest:

Think you have what it takes to be a killer rockabilly? Get your skinny jeans, white t-shirts and Wayfarers ready, and host a costume contest! Need some ideas of what you might have around your house?

For Guys:

  • Slicked back hair
  • Jeans
  • Leather jackets (in this heat? Eek!)
  • White t-shirts
  • Converse shoes

For Girls:

  • Pencil skirts
  • Capri jeans
  • Cardigans
  • Silk neck scarves
  • Poodle Skirts (of course, but do you have one in your closet?)

Care for a Drink?

Every party needs a signature drink! Why don’t you make a “Blobtail” for your guests?

The Blobtail:

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce peach schnapps
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Baileys
  • 1 teaspoon of grenadine

Method:

  1. Pour the peach schnapps into a whiskey glass.
  2. Float Bailey’s on top.
  3. Drop a teaspoon of grenadine through the middle.

A Jello “Blob”:

This is the centerpiece of any “Blob Party”…an ACTUAL Blob! Use a jello mold…or if you don’t have one, a big bowl with no lip should work just fine.

  • 1 large bowl (roughly fish bowl size or you will need more than 1 package of jello)
  • 1 package of red jello
  • ½ cup of vodka
  • A few random, WASHED, toys from the dollar store (toy soldiers, cards…things the blob would “eat”) that can get wet

Make the jello according to the package, except where it reads to add in 1 cup of cold water, substitute with ½ cup of vodka and a ½ cup of water. Once the jello starts to set just a little, then place the toys, or “Blob causalities” into the mold, and continue to let it sit. When the party starts, just shake the mold free onto a plate, and you have your own BLOB! Guests can wage war on the Blob, not with fire extinguishers and freezers, but with their spoons!

If you have too many people to do this on such large scale, make smaller “Blobs” in clear, white cups or glasses, with a single toy inside! This way, guests have a little favor at the end of the evening!

Got the right tunes?

I love music from the fifties. Love. And really, the best dance music is from the fifties, so make a play-list from that time period, with some additional spooky tunes thrown in. Here are some examples of tracks to get you doing the “jitterbug” in no time:

  • Monster Mash – Bobbly “Boris” Pickett
  • I Put a Spell on You – Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • Love Potion #9 – The Searchers
  • Bad Moon Rising – Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • Shake, Rattle and Roll – Bill Haley & the Comets
  • Tutti Frutti – Little Richard

If you’re interested in what my play-list looks like for my party (it’s 40 tracks strong and growing) check out my Spotify play-list, “The Blob Party,” HERE. It includes the original theme song for “The Blob” as well as other hits from the 50s, and a few scary, spooky surprise songs!

Whatever you choose to do during Blobfest, have a great time! It’s such a unique festival that can really be enjoyed by everyone. And remember… beware of the BLOB! It’s indescribable, indestructible and nothing can stop it!

Blobfest 2012 runs Friday, July 13th through Sunday, July 15th. Several events are sold out but check HERE for the full schedule.
