Chester County Day Slated for Oct. 6, Annual House Tour Features Southwest Quadrant

Unique in its history, architecture, art, landscape and antiques, Chester County has its own style, design aesthetic and even its own Day. For 72 years, the first Saturday in October has been reserved for the country’s oldest house tour — Chester County Day.

This year on October 6th, participants can tour the Southwest quadrant of the county beginning in East Bradford Township and view some of the oldest homes and barns in this section of Pennsylvania. They can learn about the history of the Abiah Taylor family and their life as millers in the early 18th century. The history of the “ice industry” unfolds during a tour of a restored 1834 barn. The tour continues into Pocopson Township to the “Spring Brook Farm” where a circa 1870 stone home is sure to delight. Locust Grove School House is just down the road… step back in time; look inside this unique one room schoolhouse that opened in 1870. In Unionville, stop by the London Grove Friends Meeting for a tour of this historic Quaker meeting with the “William Penn Oak Tree” on the grounds.

The Chester County Day tour continues into the Chadds Ford area with a home that was once the Fairville School, built in 1866. Just around the corner is another home thought to be a girl’s boarding school at one time, rebuilt circa 1868. Participants can enjoy an exhibit of needlepoint samples from the Brandywine Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America on display in the coach house. The historic “John Hope House” has the best of both worlds – an historic main house built in 1720, added onto in 1820 and then complemented with a spacious addition completed in 2006 that features a magnificent gourmet kitchen, family room and master bedroom suite.

There is something on this year’s tour for every home design enthusiast including rolling hills, country estates and manor homes. Along the route enjoy a picnic lunch, a wine tasting, or a nature walk in the Stroud Preserve. Experience the beauty of autumn in Chester County while supporting another local treasure – The Chester County Hospital.
