Our Recommendation: Sly Fox Dunkel Weisse

Where: Sly Fox Brewhouse and Eatery, 520 Kimberton Road (Route 113), Phoenixville, PA

I made my first visit to Sly Fox Brewhouse recently, and am wondering what took me so long! Having only tried Sly Fox’s Royal Weisse before, I was interested to sample something else from this local brewery, which is best known for leading the trend in canned craft beer.

Having arrived early to have lunch with a friend, I walked around this casual eatery and checked out the list of beers over the bar. The friendly and knowledgeable waiter explained that, even though eight or nine draft beers were listed, they were in between seasons, and expected more to be listed soon. I asked what was new on the list, and he recommended their Dunkel Weisse, so I gave that a try.

Sly Fox describes their Dunkel Weisse as a medium-bodied, Bavarian-style dark wheat beer that’s brewed with German Munich and wheat malts. My Dunkel Weisse poured a rich copper color like an autumn beer should. By the time it came to the table, there wasn’t much of a head left. It’s a vibrant wheat beer, not overpowering, but providing a well-balanced tang. At 5.8% ABV, it was a worthy lunchtime beer. I was tempted to go for a second pint, and sample a few other brews, but meetings called.

Dunkel Weisse is only available on an occasional basis, so stop by and check it out before it’s kicked. Don’t forget to take a growler with you so you can bring one of their beers home. In addition to the Sly Fox Brewhouse in Phoenixville, there is now also a Tasting Room at their brewery in Pottstown.
