Doc Magrogan’s Chef Karen Weinstein Showcases Her Chowder Skills Throughout February

When the temperatures drop there’s nothing better than a hearty helping of soup. Does it get heartier than chowder? Of course not.

This Winter, the place to get your chowder fill is at Doc Magrogan’s of University City and West Chester. The Oyster House Chef, Karen Weinstein, is intent on satisfying legions of chowder lovers throughout February by devoting the entire month to the fine art of chowder making.

Weinstein has perfected three chowders, which will be available by the cup for $4, by the bowl for $5 or shots for $1 apiece during the coldest month of the year. Chef Weinstein is even offering a flight of three shots at the bar for $3 all month long. To sweeten the deal,  Dave Magrogan has decided to offer one free chowder shot per guest per visit throughout the 5 week celebration.

She claims Doc’s New England is “the grand dame of chowders” but that wouldn’t stop us from trying all three—especially since Spicy Maryland Crab, Tomato and Corn Chowder & Butternut Fisherman’s Chowder are the two other options.

With the latter, you’ll find butternut squash, oysters, clams, shrimp, scallops and several types of white fish combined into a chestnut-hued fish lover’s fantasy bursting with flavor. On the other hand, The Spicy Chowder features a bit of kick from the jalapenos, balanced nicely with the rich lump crab meat. Since the worst of winter is yet to come, cozying up at Docs to try all three is a good way to survive the chill!

Doc Magrogan’s is open seven days a week for lunch, dinner and they offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The Oyster Houses are located at 3432 Sansom Street in University City and at 117 East Gay Street in West Chester, PA.
