First Taste: Berwyn’s 30 Main

Philadelphia artist Ellen Tiberino’s colorful stained glass catches the eye within 30 Main, the latest restaurant to open in Berwyn. Tiberino’s art is the first in a series of local artists’ showings planned.

Restaurant openings typically gravitate toward the food, but overarching the kitchen at 30 Main is an effort to welcome the local community. Father-and-son owners Matthew and Michael DiDomenico have big plans to encourage the neighborhood to come on out. Expect additional local art showings, fashion shows, open-mic nights and nonprofit auctions. Industry night is Monday, naturally, with specials for the restaurant crews. Did I mention the Saturday Disco Brunch?

The restaurant is most certainly a welcome addition in the space that used to house Baxter’s Black Sheep Saloon. Berwyn needed more options for classic American fare, and on our “first taste” visit the staff couldn’t have been more personable, warm and welcoming.

General Manager Dan Elliott is overseeing the restaurant and the kitchen; his team is putting the final touches on the menu this week. Find a range of quintessential eats on this menu—like a hearty burger loaded with wild mushrooms, sharp cheddar and caramelized shallots on a fluffy brioche bun and the Dory’s chicken, rolled with sharp provolone, prosciutto and breadcrumbs and complemented by a rich béchamel. Thai shrimp spring rolls with an apricot chile glaze are an addictive snack after a couple of beers.

Which brings me to our favorite part of the 30 Main experience: the excellent selection of brews. Just when we thought we had tasted every beer available, this restaurant surprises with a diverse draft, always served in an ice-cold glass. Picks include Starr Hill Lager, Troegs Nugget Nectar, Rogue Dead Guy Ale and more. Craft bottles include Anchor Steam, Magic Hat #9, Leffe Blonde (an all-time favorite), Rogue Mocha Porter and others.

Within a day, 30 Main morphs from business lunches and family dinners to a lounge-like atmosphere with live music. But while the scene may shift, it seems that one thing stays the same: this is a neighborhood place where you’ll know people by name.
