French Supermarket Intermarché Takes Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables by Storm

Shockingly, more than 300 MILLION tons of fruits and vegetables are thrown away each year, simply because they’re deemed less than beautiful. After the European Union named 2014 the Year Against Food Waste, Intermarché, the third-largest supermarket chain in France, decided to take action, launching the “Les Fruits & Legumes Moches”—Inglorious Fruits & Vegetables—campaign, which celebrated the beauty of “noncalibrated and unperfect fruits and vegetables.”

The Grotesque Apple, the Ridiculous Potato, the Hideous Orange, the Failed Lemon, the Disfigured Eggplant, the Ugly Carrot and the Unfortunate Clementine, products that are usually thrown away before they even reach the supermarket, were bought from growers and sold at Intermarché at a cost of 30% less than “perfect” produce. The store’s simple message: Just as good, but cheaper.

How did the public react to this “glorious fight against food waste”? You’ll have to watch this video to find out:
