New Brew Review: Victory Brewing Co. & Earth Bread + Brewery’s Earth & Flame

A little snow didn’t stop the faithful on Wee Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving 2014, from bellying up to the bar for the first sips of Earth & Flame, the latest beer collaboration from Victory Brewing Company.

Victory teamed up with Earth Bread + Brewery’s Tom Baker to dream up this bourbon barrel aged smoked scotch style ale. Known to seasoned beer lovers as a Wee Heavy, it made scores of breakfast goers wee happy starting at 10 a.m. Thanksgiving Wednesday.

Earth & Flame lives up to expectations: dark and robust, you’ll get toffee up front, plus notes of caramel, gingerbread and even plum. The bourbon barrel isn’t lost in the process and leaves behind a hint of smokiness. It’s roasty and earthy with just a touch of vanilla on the finish. Fans of darker brews will love this offering, but it’s very approachable for all. Earth & Flame comes in at a heady 11.7% ABV and is served from the taps in 10 oz. glasses.

This limited edition gem is available while it lasts at the brewpub, at Victory’s Downingtown retail store and at craft beer bars, bottle shops, beer distributors and major gourmet grocery stores including Whole Foods and Wegmans throughout Victory’s 35-state distribution footprint. Earth & Flame’s suggested retail price for a 750 ml bottle is approximately $15, but varies upon location. Use Victory’s Beerfinder to discover a nearby location, or download the free Victory Mobile app for Android or iPhone.

Victory will also be selling just 100 bottles of Earth & Flame signed by Victory’s Ron Barchet, Bill Covaleski and James Gentile (a senior brewer at Victory and lead brewer on this beer) and Tom Baker of Earth Bread + Brewery. Proceeds from these bottles will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. This is a great opportunity to get a piece of history while supporting an organization near and dear to our hearts.

Get your winter on in a most delicious way. Bundle up and use a sleigh if needed to get your share of this holiday-inspired craft beer.
