How One Philly Pizza Shop Is Paying It Forward—One Slice at a Time

Changing the world, one slice at a time. That’s what Mason Wartman, owner of Rosa’s Fresh Pizza in Philadelphia, is hoping to do.

What started with one customer giving $1 so that someone in need could enjoy a meal has become a Philly phenomenon. Now, anyone who so desires can donate $1 at checkout and add a Post-It note to Rosa’s wall. If you’re hungry, grab a Post-It and redeem it for a fresh, hot slice. No questions asked. Wartman, a former Wall Street 9-to-5er, has garnered attention nationwide with this unique “pay it forward” program, landing him in the pages of People magazine, on the Ellen show and in the hearts of millions around the nation.

According to this article on Upworthy, since that initial act of generosity, Rosa’s has provided nearly 10,000 slices to needy Philadelphians, and pre-purchased slices now represent an incredible 10% of the pizza parlor’s business. You can even donate online if you’re not able to make it to Philadelphia.
