World’s Largest Indoor Vertical Farm to Soon Open in Newark, New Jersey

West Chester Co-Op

AeroFarms has been leading the way in vertical indoor farming since its founding in 2004. Using patented growing technology developed by former Cornell University professor Dr. Ed Hardwood, AeroFarms has more than 11 years of experience in optimizing farming for taste, texture, nutrition and yield. The company takes its name from the method of growing crops called aeroponics.

New Jersey Business reports that AeroFarms is set to open its 70,000-square-foot indoor vertical farm (the world’s largest) and global headquarters in Newark, New Jersey. The company’s vision is to offer fresh and healthy food options to the city while also providing jobs and community support. The AeroFarms facility has received public investments from the city of Newark and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, as well as other private organizations.

The project is expected to introduce 78 new jobs to the city and will produce two million pounds of soil-free food. In early October, PBS NewsHour compiled a special report on indoor farming in New York City that profiled AeroFarms.
