It’s sometimes difficult to find a consistently great bakery. Some bakeries concoct creative confections for that event or party that caught you unprepared. Others are terrific for grabbing a snack and cup of freshly brewed coffee while leisurely perusing social media. Bakers of Buffington
Since 1987, this bakery has been creating custom desserts, cheesecakes and pies for weddings, graduations, birthdays, showers and just about any celebration you can dream up. Salivate over Black Forest, Italian Rum, Pumpkin Praline and Coconut Custard pies, to name just a few. The bakery’s location in the center of Downingtown makes parking a breeze. The Bakers at Red Lion
Loaves of fresh-baked French bread, boules and a few surprises—baked onsite by Barbara Churchville and Nancy Fenstermacher, affectionately known as the “bread ladies”—await you in a quaint home with a French flag located just behind Longwood Gardens. You have to arrive early (they open at 9:30 a.m.) because the bakery sells out fast. Breads are great to pair with local cheeses and wines from Galer Estate Winery, which is conveniently located across the street. Bakery hours are limited to Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. 327 E. La Baguette Magique
Owner/founder Catherine Seisson and her team of bakery artisans create some of the most authentic breads, quiches, pastries and of course baguettes in the area. With French-themed breakfast and lunch combos and the charm of the rustic decor, you’ll swear you’re sitting at a Paris street cafe. Dixie Picnic
We just couldn’t get through our round-up without mentioning the home of the locally famous “Upcake.” Touted as an upside-down cupcake (scoring more icing coverage area while keeping the cake more moist), the sweet treat uses only natural ingredients. The list of gotta-have flavors includes Zebra Cake, Toasted Almond, Pistachio and Peanut Butter. The Master’s Baker
Having been in business for more than 40 years and recently opening a new location in West Chester, this wholesale spot offers exceptional cakes, cupcakes and mini-desserts for weddings, parties and Mitzvahs. Malvern Buttery
We discovered the amazing team of John and Silenia Rhoads when they first opened this gem last year within the East Side Flats building. You can count on spending a good part of your day enjoying the ambience of this Euro-chic hangout known for croissants, scones and mouth-watering artisan breads and rolls—in addition to a standout lunch and dinner menu. 233 E. Nomadic Pies
We just can’t stop eating owner/baker Molly Johnston’s flaky-crusted locally sourced creations. Whether it’s her hot-out-of-the-oven savory Chicken Pot Pie, the sweet and tart Strawberry Rhubarb or one of her knock-it-out-of-the-park quiches, this aroma-filled shop will definitely have you coming back for more. Northbrook Marketplace
You can’t miss this big red barn southwest of West Chester or, more importantly, you can’t miss the incredible smell of addictive fresh-baked apple cider cinnamon donuts, pies and pastries wafting through the country air. Sweet Beginnings Bakery
For those who remember the long-gone local favorite Ingleside Diner/Bakery, those secret dessert recipes are here for the taking—or make that eating. Sweet Celebrations Bake Shop
Owner Debbie Lawrence Brown recently opened her dream bakery tucked in the corner of the Great Valley Shopping Center. The bright and cheery shop does personalized cakes and cupcakes for every occasion. The one-of-a-kind creations are made with quality ingredients and lots of love. Westtown Amish Market
We reviewed this decadent hotspot when it first opened last year. Stroll the aisles of Amish-made goodies if you dare, but we warned you. Gigantic donuts, sticky buns, pies, breads as well as pretzel rolls and chocolate-covered everything (yes, even bacon) abound. If you come out of here empty-handed, you’re just not doing it right. Yori’s Church Street Bakery
Open since June of 2012, Yori’s touts a list of desserts that includes cakes, pastries and holiday specialities. Everything is done on site from scratch.
