First Look: Sweet Celebrations Bake Shop

What is it about a pretty cupcake that never lets me tire of seeking ways to get one from the oven into my mouth? I happily search through the proliferation of local bakeries, coffee shops, food trucks, farmers’ markets and restaurants continuously reestablishing, reinventing and reintroducing the cupcake. After all, it’s only a couple of eggs, a little flour, a few sprinkles of sugar and a drop or two of vanilla, right? Slap on some colorful icing in a pretty swirl, throw on a few sprinkles and call it a day.

But perhaps it’s more than that. Much more.

Sweet Celebrations owner Debbie Brown

Enter Debbie Brown—owner and sole baker—of the recently opened Sweet Celebrations Bake Shop in Malvern. Located in the slightly hidden yet locally well-known Great Valley Mini Mall (in the Great Valley Shopping Center), the storefront that Debbie and a crew of dedicated friends created is now ready for business.

Debbie always had an innate knack for baking (and did so at home) while developing a loyal word-of-mouth following. As luck would have it, she happened to be available at the same time that a friend of hers shut down a bakery with excess equipment, pans and utensils. The perfect storm ballooned when the location and the timing gave Debbie the focus she needed to open up.

“I originally just wanted a kitchen space where I could bake to my heart’s content,” she noted while generating additional orders, “but we opened up the large window in the front, built shelves and the counter, added ovens and painted bright and playful colors” while adding personal touches that make her vision welcoming as well as functional.

Well-established neighboring stores including Byrum’s Shoe Repair and Debbies Hair Fashion bring a few new customers from foot traffic. “I really appreciate this little community of businesses. They’ve been so supportive and make it enjoyable to come in to bake,” said Debbie.

Proclaiming authenticity, Debbie admitted that she “loves the TV show Cupcake Wars” and humbly explained that she “knows she wouldn’t make it to the finals,” but that doesn’t deter her from producing a solid base of “never-frozen, always-fresh scratch” confections for takeout or preorder.

She seemed a natural salesperson as I witnessed her professional manner with a customer at the counter when I arrived. Newcomers and fanatics alike flock to her signature peanut butter pies (I tried and died), pound cakes, carrot cakes, pumpkin cakes, cream puffs, eclairs and filled cupcakes. She remains focused on a short and simple list of confections—and it shows.

A couple of glass-enclosed cases in the shop are usually stocked with cupcakes (orange creamsicle, raspberry-filled and chocolate peanut butter on the day of my visit) for drop-ins, but it’s her dedication to preorder events like corporate parties, showers, birthdays, graduations and retirement gigs that drives the business forward. Her rapid turnaround time for an order seems exceptional. “I once did an order of over 500 cupcakes in a two-day timeframe,” she stated. “The customer loved how I personalized the order with their corporate colors and logos in addition to tasting decadent.”

On her cheerfully decorated counter she opened a book highlighting her repertoire of work that made my mouth water. “I had no idea how to create this one,” she admitted as she pointed to a photo of a stunning replica of a BMW automobile cake for a customer. “I just kept focused, looked at photos and everyone was highly satisfied with the result.”

Currently working a part-time job during the start of the week, the blue-eyed, well-coiffed cupcake contessa has bakery hours from mid-week on that are typically scheduled around current orders—although Debbie remains flexible with scheduling customer appointments and encourages calling her personally for consultations. Her Facebook page typically lists her daily hours.

What makes Debbie and her Sweet Celebrations in it for the long haul is that she’s open to working with customers to create dietary-restrictive creations, special-request designs and flavor-specific orders to make everyone happy.

Looking ahead, Debbie is confident that she’ll eventually get some of her goods into local shops, restaurants and other venues to more widely share what she has to offer.
