Two Fall Golf Events Serve the Health of Chester County

Here’s the perfect fall combination: an Oktoberfest-themed golf tournament that benefits our Chester County neighbors with cancer. Whether you are a hacker, a duffer or a scratch player, you can feel good about the day of golf that will take place at the Coatesville Country Club on Monday, October 10, while you celebrate with 18 holes, German classics and a few beers. Best of all, proceeds from this fun day benefit The Abramson Cancer Program at Chester County Hospital.

Chester County Hospital The Bowk logoThe 10th Annual Gordon Bowker Memorial Golf Tournament, affectionately known as “The Bowk,” is organized and run by volunteers, including Gordon Bowker’s wife, Gretchen. Gordy was treated at the Cancer Center of Chester County. After his death in 2006, Gretchen wanted to give back. She was determined to help others in their battle with cancer, honor the hospital’s caring staff and doctors and enhance patient care. Proceeds from previous events have helped fund new ergonomic recliners for chemotherapy treatments and a big screen television that acts as a welcome distraction. Funds have also helped to build a tranquil garden outside the Cancer Center.

The day of the tournament features a shotgun start at 12 noon, with day-of registration beginning at 10:30 a.m. The entry fee, $150 per person prior to September 20 ($200 after that date), includes beer, soda and water on the course; golf cart; a boxed lunch; and a buffet dinner at Coatesville Country Club following the tournament. Plenty of prizes will include a hole-in-one car giveaway from Brian Hoskins Ford of Coatesville.

If you don’t want to golf but still want to participate, come out to dinner only for $50 per person. The cash bar opens at 4 p.m., with dinner served at 5 p.m.

Separately, Chester County Hospital’s wellness team is offering special presentations on a variety of wellness-related topics year round. As you get ready for fall golf tournaments, you can learn all about “Joint Pain and Your Golf Swing” on Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m.–12 noon at The Downingtown Country Club. (This wellness program is not related to “The Bowk” tournament.)

Todd Michener, MD, a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, is teaming up with golf pro Dante Troiani and a physical rehabilitation specialist to help you get back in the game! Enjoy a hearty continental breakfast while learning valuable tips and information.
