Winging It in Southern Chester County

The fall season brings many things to mind … pumpkins, apples, colorful leaves, football—and wings! Nothing goes better with a football game than a plate of wings smothered in delicious, tangy sauce.

Chicken Wings

What makes a perfect wing? In our opinion, it comes down to three factors: crispiness, size and sauce. And who’s got the best wings in Southern Chester County? Again, it’s really a matter of taste, but we scoped out the scene and landed on these five spots (plus one just over the border in Delaware) that serve ‘em sweet, tangy, spicy and just plain delicious. Grab a napkin and dig in:

Penn Brew Station

This family-owned, family-run store specializes in quick service food, but don’t think it’s a fast food establishment. Each and every order is prepared fresh. Jumbo wings come in quantities of 8, 15 and 50 with basic flavors—mild, hot, nuclear and BBQ. With plenty of pickup items and a great selection of cold takeout beer to go, Penn Brew is your one-stop shop for game night. 627 W. Baltimore Pike, West Grove, (610) 869-8830

Casa Italia

When asked, many locals chimed in in praise of Casa Italia’s wings. Deep-fried and served with your choice of sauce on the side, these crispy wings offer crowd-pleasing variety for the big game. The restaurant specializes in takeout, but seating is also available if you just can’t wait to tear in! 1876 New London Rd., Lincoln University, (610) 255-5519

Chicken Wings

Sawmill Grill

Oxford’s answer to a neighborhood family restaurant is also one of the best places to get wings. The courteous and attentive staff invites you to stay and watch the game while you feast. Wings are meaty, fried to crispy perfection and served with sauces in several degrees of heat for traditional Buffalo wings. Or, think outside the box and try the alternative Sweet Chili and Old Bay sauces. 306 Market St., Oxford, (610) 467-1909

Ugly Mutt

Ugly Mutt is another place to “dine in” for the game. TVs and a relaxed atmosphere will make you want to belly up to the bar and order a plate of wings. A house favorite, wings come in three order sizes and with a choice of mild, hot, honey BBQ, honey mustard, BBQ, sweet & sour, atomic or plain sauces. There’s plenty to choose from—make every game day a new experience! 562 Lincoln St., Oxford, (610) 998-9000

A Taste of Philly

Known for super-friendly service, A Taste of Philly will make you will feel right at home when you order your wings in quantities of 6, 12 or 24. Whether for casual dining or takeout, this Oxford gem stands out with locals and with travelers passing through town. Regulars rave about and swear that the unique “swat” sauce—a special concoction of “sweet and hot”—is the only way to go, but be sure to check out the Old Bay, too. 703 Commons Dr., Oxford, (610) 932-5209

Chicken Wings

Dyers Deli

Not only does Dyers have the lowdown on fryer perfection for insane crispiness, but the sauce options are incredible as well. The deli boasts 20 (!) different flavors of sauce for your choice of regular or boneless wings. More than a few wing fanatics insist that the Italian-style wings are a must. Dyers also has various wing night specials; follow along on Facebook for details. 5739 W. Lincoln Hwy., Parkesburg, (717) 442-7967

Just Across the Border

We’d be doing wings a serious injustice if we didn’t mention 2 Fat Guys, located just over the Southern Chester County line in Hockessin, Delaware. The wings are jumbo, crisp and sumptuous and come in an array of incredible flavors. Trust us: you really must try the PB&J sauce for a different (and delicious) wing experience. Two Fat Guys is a friendly place to eat in or take out. 701 Ace Memorial Dr., Hockessin, DE, (302) 235-0333
