Chestnut Hill’s Mica closed down this summer, but only long enough to allow chef and new owner Yianni Arhontoulis to make a few adjustments to the interior and plan out a new and intriguing menu.

Now a BYOB, guests are invited to experience Mica in a different light and embrace all that Chef Arhontoulis has to offer.

I had the opportunity to speak with Chef Arhontoulis recently about the new Mica, his latest menu offerings and what we can expect at this cozy BYOB in the coming months.

mica-preservesWhen asked of his initial desire to acquire Mica, Chef Arhontoulis stated that the opportunity presented itself and it just felt right.

“I had worked for Chip Roman, the prior owner, for almost four years, at both Mica and Blackfish,” said Chef Arhontoulis. “It was a very easy transition and nostalgic for me to return to Mica.”

The interior is now an eye-catching peacock blue and the bar area has transitioned into a display area, showcasing the pickles and preserves used in the kitchen. The rooms have an added welcoming feel with floral arrangements and succulents on display. The main dining room is inviting, with 14 tables available for dinner service.

“I enjoy the space,” stated Chef Arhontoulis. “It has a romantic, intimate quality.”

And, of course, I was eager to get an inside peek at the food and learn more about the newest menu offerings.

“The a la carte menu items are approachable,” said Chef Arhontoulis.

Quite a bit of the ingredients are sourced from local farms, such as Erdenheim Farm and Blue Moon Acres. Also, the a la carte menu will be revamped every six weeks, just enough time to allow for those who find a favorite on the menu to enjoy it a few times, but not too long as to prevent new favorites from being discovered.

Some of the current menu offerings include a snack of grilled sourdough with ham and pickles, a charcoal-roasted eggplant with bonito and basil appetizer and entrees such as roast chicken with whipped potatoes and wild mushrooms.

For dinner guests who wish to take their dining experience to a whole new level, Mica’s $69, 6-course tasting menu is the way to go. The tasting dinner will be offered nightly with a weekly change to keep it fresh and exciting.

Want a sneak peek at the weekly tasting menu? Sign up on Mica’s website to receive emails and you’ll be notified each week about what’s on the menu. Emails will also offer suggested wine pairings to enhance your experience.

As for Chef Arhontoulis’ favorite dish?

“I’m a big fan of the Fairy Tale eggplant appetizer.”

Chef Arhontoulis added that special events are on the agenda for the future and that he will look for the public’s input when planning. One upcoming event, the weekend of October 22, is a Harry Potter-themed brunch to coincide with Chestnut Hill’s ever-popular Harry Potter Festival.

A quaint room in the restaurant known as “The Library” will accommodate up to 10 people and is perfect for special private events.

Chef Arhontoulis is no stranger to the Chestnut Hill community, having worked at Mica in the past, so I asked him what he loved about this lovely Philadelphia neighborhood.

“It’s a beautiful, tight community and everyone is incredibly supportive,” he exclaimed. “I’m able to present food in a different way, the public is interested and I want to make something for Chestnut Hill.”

Welcome back to the neighborhood, Chef Arhontoulis. We’re so glad you’re here and can’t wait to see what unfolds at Mica in the future.

Mica is open for dinner Tuesday–Saturday from 5–10 p.m.
