Raise a Flag with Tattered Flag Brewery & Stillworks

We were anxiously awaiting the opening of Tattered Flag Brewery & Stillworks and were overjoyed when the time came to debut the area’s very first co-branded craft brewery and craft distillery.

Located at 1 S. Union St. in Middletown, Tattered Flag has been an idea in the minds of owners Pat Devlin, Matt Fritz, Tony DeLellis and Ben Ramsay since the group graduated from Susquenita High School in 2000. These four best friends never thought that they would come together to open a brewery, but they happily supported Navy veteran Pat’s dreams. As a veteran-owned and -operated business, their focus is simple—to give back to the communities around them while providing a one-of-a-kind brewery experience.

The brewery itself is located in the Historic Elks Building, which once housed four separate businesses. The property is over 100 years old and has a welcoming, rustic feel. Exposed brick walls can be found throughout, the original hardwood floors are intact and much of the furniture and furnishings within the tasting room is made of reclaimed wood from within the structure.

On the first floor you will find the tasting room, still and a small dining area overlooking the basement-level brewery. The second floor will open before the end of October 2016 with a full restaurant, secondary bar and private event space. When the second floor opens, Tattered Flag is hoping to host private events as well as beer pairing dinners and breakfasts with the brewer. Currently, the food menu in the tasting room is limited to snacks, soups, salad and sandwiches as Tattered Flag prepares to transition to the full-scale restaurant.

Tattered Flag has eight beers that are considered to be its flagships, or year-round brews: TMI PA, Hefeweizen, Breakfast Stout, Black IPA, Manghost, Blue Raider Cream Ale, Pilsner and ALEways RemAmber. The Blue Raider Cream Ale is modeled after a domestic “light beer,” and the ALEway RemAmber is similar to a lager, offering an approachable setting for all levels of craft beer interest. For those more daring, try the Manghost, a Triple IPA brewed with Citra hops, mangoes and ghost chili peppers.

Alongside the flagships are small batch brews such as Brett Peach Milkshake IPA, Brexit Pale Ale, Tangerine Berliner Weisse and Chocolate Pumpkin Porter, among others. These beers are made in limited quantities and change as they rotate and become available. Many of these are brewed seasonally and some may never return. If you’re looking for a unique beer, these are the ones to seek out.

In addition to its own craft beer, Tattered Flag also offers local wine from the Vineyard at Hershey, mixed drinks using liquor from both Midstate Distillery and Spirits of Gettysburg and local ciders from Vineyard at Hershey and Wyndridge Farm.

Currently, the still is not operational as licensing has not yet been approved. In the future, Tattered Flag will be able to produce and sell its own liquor.
