Weckerly’s Sets Opening Date for Brick-and-Mortar Shop in Fishtown

On Friday, December 9, at 4 p.m., Jen and Andy Satinsky, husband-and-wife owners of Weckerly’s, the Philadelphia-based micro-creamery specializing in French-style custard ice cream, will open their first brick-and-mortar ice cream shop in the city’s Fishtown neighborhood. At their shop, the Satinskys will offer a selection of signature ice cream sandwiches, hand-dipped ice cream/sorbet and other dessert specialties. Located at 9 W. Girard Ave., Weckerly’s ice cream shop will churn new flavors frequently and will scoop seven days a week.

“Opening a brick-and-mortar shop has always been our goal and when we found this storefront in Fishtown we knew we could stop looking for the perfect spot,” says Jen, a trained pastry chef. “We look forward to meeting our new friends and neighbors and creating a comfortable place where they can stop by, hang out and enjoy a treat,” adds Andy, who left his job as a bicycle mechanic to focus on customer relations as the Weckerly‘s business began to grow.

Beginning Friday, December 9, guests may enjoy cups and homemade cones of one ($4.75) or two ($7) scoops of Weckerly’s ice cream in flavors including Whole Bean Vanilla; Hot Chocolate, a chipotle cinnamon spice chocolate with swirls of handmade toasted marshmallow fluff; Jim’s Secret Stash, a bronze fennel from Philadelphia’s Heritage Farm with a salted licorice swirl; Lemongrass Cherry, a variety of lemongrass and Pennsylvania-grown sour cherries; Apple Cider Sorbet; and Peanut Butter Populi, a crowd-sourced flavor made of peanut butter ice cream with chocolate and peanut butter honeycomb candy. Peanut Butter Populi was selected from suggestions and input from fans via Weckerly’s Facebook and Instagram.

In addition, ice cream sandwich flavors will include Black and White ($5), a Weckerly’s staple; Crème Fraîche Cranberry ($5) on spiced shortbread; and Baglr’s Rhapsody ($6), a collaboration with new neighbor Philly Style Bagels, featuring layers of cream cheese ice cream and bagel ice cream sandwiched between an IPA cookie with toasted sesame, fennel seed and sea salt.

Like Weckerly’s ice creams, the 350-square-foot shop will also have the personal touches of local makers. Chicory Florals will hang plants throughout the space. Local photographer Neal Santos will hang works featuring Weckerly’s farm partners along the walls. An ice cream “bar” for guests to rest their elbows upon while enjoying cones and cups will also be installed in the storefront window.

Weckerly’s will be open Sunday through Thursday from noon until 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from noon until 10 p.m.
